Yes, you can swap a manual tranny in there, but is going to be a lot of work where you will not have the car drivable. It is better to just find a 5 speed to start with.

Sideways, yes, to a point. There is not enough power to seriously smoke the tires, but it is an easy car to throw into corners sideways.

You will find parts only in salvage yards, or someone that is parting out one if you are lucky. For your #4 oil problem, it is likely that the rings are not so good any more.
